Volunteer Program

Museum Volunteer Staff Members are our direct links to the community. Volunteers who work in the Museum bring their knowledge, enthusiasm and commitment to help make the museum a pleasant and enjoyable place for our visitors, to help preserve irreplaceable natural and historical resources in the collection, and to enjoy new learning experiences. Contact volunteer services, (909) 307-2669 ext. 252 / TDD/TTY: (909) 792-1462 and find out how you can join in.

Assignments
The Museum relies on volunteers to fill many roles. Some volunteers work with the public and others work behind the scenes with our collections. Some volunteers talk to school children on field trips, while others do data entry, work on special projects, help with family programs, or work with Museum artifacts. No matter what kind of task they do, the Museum staff relies on volunteers to enrich our Museum and our community.

Education: Volunteers are trained to serve as exhibit interpreters, greeters for school groups and other Museum visitors, and assistants for special projects or activities like our family workshops. The live animal Exploration Station needs weekday morning volunteers to help with animal care. An Education volunteer needs to be a real “people person” who likes to learn new things. If you are interested in volunteering for the Museum’s Education Division, fill out a Volunteer Application, then contact the Volunteer Coordinator by email, or phone 909-307-2669, ext. 252 / TDD/TTY: (909) 792-1462, for a preliminary interview.

History: Volunteers translate documents (Spanish/English), do data entry, catalogue artifacts, organize research materials, sort newspaper scrapbooks, etc. Opportunities are arranged as various projects arise. If you are interested in volunteering for the Museum’s History and Archives Division, fill out a Volunteer Application, then contact theVolunteer Coordinator by email, or phone 909-307-2669, ext. 252 / TDD/TTY: (909) 792-1462, for a preliminary interview.

Anthropology/archaeology: After training, volunteers are needed for scanning photos, cataloguing collections, data entry, inventory, filing, weighing and measuring artifacts, re-boxing collections, or other tasks as needed by the Curator of Anthropology. Please fill out a Volunteer Application, and then contact the Volunteer Coordinator by email, or phone 909-307-2669, ext. 252 / TDD/TTY: (909) 792-1462, for a preliminary interview.

Museum Youth Club: This is an after-school program for seventh and eighth graders in the Redlands area. We need volunteers age 18 and up who like kids this age and could volunteer regularly on Tuesdays or Wednesdays or Thursdays during the traditional school year. Volunteers get a chance to make a difference to middle school kids while helping the MYC staff run weekly meetings from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m. For more information, please contact the Museum Youth Club Coordinator at 909-307-2669, ext. 271 / TDD/TTY: (909) 792-1462, or email at nkirkwood@sbcm.sbcounty.gov.
