SENIOR
CURATOR TO GIVE GALLERY TALK
Kathleen Springer, senior curator of geological sciences at the
San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands, will give an informal
gallery talk on the subject of fossils at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday,
March 20. The presentation is free with museum general admission.
The presentation is part of the continuing monthly series of
gallery talks by curatorial staff to provide visitors with more
insight about specific exhibits on display in the museum.
Springer will escort museum guests through the current exhibit,
"Unearthed! Fossils in the Museum Collections." She
will discuss the creation of the exhibit and the importance of
museum collections for preserving the heritage of a community
and furthering scientific endeavors. She will then lead visitors
through other parts of the museum, emphasizing the displays of
rocks, minerals, and fossils to highlight the geologic richness
of San Bernardino County.
Kathleen Springer is the senior curator of geological sciences
for the San Bernardino County Museum. She has an extensive background
in geology and paleontology with over nineteen years experience
in leading geologic and paleontologic investigations throughout
southern California, Arizona and Nevada. She specializes in the
application of stratigraphic and geomorphologic controls and interpretations
to paleontologic investigations, and she emphasizes the importance
of detailed data recovery and full curation of recovered resources
in such studies. Her efforts have led to the recovery and preservation
of thousands of significant fossils and their associated data
that currently reside in the museum. She is responsible for developing
fossil resource management guidelines for county, state and federal
agencies and has directed sensitivity assessments and resource
mitigation programs throughout the southwestern United States.
She has been recognized by the Association of Environmental Professionals
for environmental education and by the California Mineralogical
Society that awarded a scholarship in her name to the school of
her choice (her alma mater, the University of California, Riverside,
Earth Sciences Department). Kathleen is a resident of Claremont,
California, and a devoted soccer/basketball/baseball mom of two.
