Museum Field Trip to Historic North Redlands
Registration is now open for a San Bernardino County Museum day trip led by Michele Nielsen, museum curator of history/archives. The trip, scheduled for Saturday, July 23, will explore historic neighborhoods in the former Lugonia area, as represented in vintage photographs from the museum archives.
“This trip was organized because our sold-out similar tour of neighborhoods in south Redlands last month was so enthusiastically received. So once again, we’ll hop on a trolley and spend a day taking close looks at great neighborhoods,” said Nielsen. “We will be looking at the built environment including homes, churches, the University of Redlands, and local downtown businesses. We will examine the palm trees, citrus trees, and even the rose bushes that make up the traditional landscape of the city and their influence on the shaping of the community. And we’ll step back in time to look at the history of the zanja irrigation ditch, another integral part of the story. At noon, we will stop and enjoy a gourmet picnic lunch under the shady trees at historic Sylvan Park just as many outdoor adventurers have done in Redlands in times past.”
Participants will gather at the county museum at 9:00 a.m. and return about 2:00 p.m. The cost is $50 per person ($40 for members of the San Bernardino County Museum Association), which includes trolley transportation, a morning coffee break, a gourmet picnic lunch, and beverages. Children aged 9 and over are welcomed but must be accompanied by an adult. Space is limited and pre-paid reservations are required.
“Wear comfortable walking shoes, sun screen, and a sun hat,” recommended Nielsen. “We’ll be taking short walks as well as enjoying the luxury of a spacious trolley with generous windows.”
Registration forms are available at the museum, by phone request (909-307-2669 ext. 225 / TDD/TTY: (909) 792-1462) or on line at www.sbcountymuseum.org. “Historic Lugonia” is one of a series of field trips organized by the San Bernardino County Museum Association that offer the opportunity to learn about our region’s cultural and natural history accompanied by a museum curator. This trip is made possible with support from Braswell’s Chateau Villa.
