Museum Youth Club to Enroll New Members
The San Bernardino County Museum Education Division will hold an orientation meeting for prospective members of the Museum Youth Club and their parents at the museum on Tuesday, October 4, 2005 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. The MYC is a group of seventh and eighth graders who get together at the museum each week to learn more about the world and their place in it. New members are added each October.
“Museum Youth Club members explore new ideas, do activities, build new relationships, and have fun together while learning more about the museum and what it holds,” said Nancy Kirkwood, museum educator. “Members attend weekly meetings, go on field trips, have sleepovers, and volunteer at the museum. MYC is not a drop-in program; each student must fill out an application and be accepted as a member.”
The club is split into three groups, each meeting on the same day every week from 3:15 to 6 p.m. Members can join the Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday group. During the meetings, the content focus is on biology, anthropology, archaeology, geology, paleontology, and California history, with learning centered on hands-on, inquiry-based activities at the museum. The MYC also sponsors Family Fun Days and other events at the museum during the year, and members have the opportunity to develop fun learning activities for young museum visitors and their families.
“Although the program itself is for seventh and eighth graders, some MYC members have decided to become regular museum volunteers,” said Kirkwood. “They complete interpretive training with the MYC staff and help out in the Exploration Station or in the museum galleries.”
Membership in the Museum Youth Club is a two-year commitment and club members are expected to attend at least three of the four weekly meetings each month. There is no cost to attend meetings; a $10 donation is requested each year to help cover the cost of snacks, and some field trips may have an admission fee. Parents normally provide transportation to and from the museum.
Following the orientation meeting on Tuesday, October 4, students and their parents will fill out an application form, which is due to the museum by October 5. Students will be notified about their acceptance into MYC by October 12; the first meetings are October 18, 19, and 20.
